È il 1983 quando Franz Paludetto acquista il Castello di Rivara ai piedi delle Alpi piemontesi. Comincia con lui una stagione di mecenatismo che consacra nuovamente questo luogo come avamposto di sperimentazione di arte contemporanea. Un secolo prima, un cenacolo di artisti aveva iniziato una rivoluzione pittorica nella ricerca sul paesaggio dipinto dal vero. Artisti da tutta Europa si erano incontrati qui per fondare la Scuola di pittura di Rivara. L’ultima a vivere la dimensione privata di questo spazio ormai diventato museo, un luogo sospeso nel binomio bellezza-decadenza, è una giovane artista che spinge il castellano a imprimere sulla pellicola le sue memorie. Nasce fra i due un rapporto di amicizia e un gioco di assenze. Sullo sfondo di un racconto intimo si realizzano le grandi imprese dell’Italia del secondo Novecento: il paese esce dalla guerra e si apre a nuove prospettive sociali. Franz si lascia alle spalle il trauma del fascismo e si crea una nuova identità. Arte e cultura industriale diventano i grandi temi del suo museo. Nel corso di una narrazione lunga un decennio si vede la giovane crescere, mentre il gallerista si avvicina alla morte.
It was 1983 when Franz Paludetto purchased the Rivara Castle at the foot of the Piedmont Alps. With him begins a season of patronage that once again consecrates this place as an outpost of contemporary art experimentation. A century earlier, a group of artists had started a pictorial revolution in research on landscapes painted from life. Artists from all over Europe had met here to found the Rivara School of Painting. The last to experience the private dimension of this space which has now become a museum, a place suspended in the combination of beauty and decadence, is a young artist who pushes the castellan to imprint his memories on film. A friendship and a game of absences are born between the two. Against the backdrop of an intimate story, the great undertakings of Italy in the second half of the twentieth century take place: the country emerges from the war and opens up to new social perspectives. Franz leaves behind the trauma of fascism and creates a new identity. Art and industrial culture become the great themes of his museum. Over the course of a decade-long narrative, we see the young woman grow up, while the gallery owner approaches death.

Attraversando le caratteristiche e decadenti strade cubane, Lav Diaz – il famoso regista filippino – e Gustavo Flecha – un loquace tassista cubano – si ritrovano a discutere di politica, migrazione, condizioni sociali e amore; toccando molte vicende ed esperienze personali, i due creano un affresco storico delle condizioni dei loro Paesi. Durante le loro discussioni emerge però il vero motivo dietro la presenza del regista a Cuba: Lav sta cercando un misterioso ex generale scappato dalle Filippine al termine della dittatura di Marcos, Juan Mijares Cruz.
Crossing the characteristic and decadent Cuban streets, Lav Diaz – the famous Filipino director – and Gustavo Flecha – a talkative Cuban taxi driver – find themselves discussing politics, migration, social conditions and love; touching on many personal events and experiences, the two create a historical fresco of the conditions of their countries. During their discussions, however, the real reason behind the director’s presence in Cuba emerges: Lav is looking for a mysterious former general who escaped from the Philippines at the end of Marcos’ dictatorship, Juan Mijares Cruz.

Antartide, 1988: una nave deve fuggire dalla morsa dei ghiacci per raggiungere la baia di Terra Nova. La rompighiaccio italiana Laura Bassi nel 2023 segue la stessa rotta e raggiunge il punto più a sud del pianeta mai raggiunto da una nave. Il racconto naviga attraverso le comunicazioni radio, facendo sentire lo spettatore come se fosse all’interno di una navicella spaziale. L’essere umano viene riportato a uno stato primordiale, fatto di scoperte, resistenza e paure. Un’esperienza profondamente emozionale in un luogo remoto, pericoloso e ancora poco esplorato.
Antarctica, 1988: a ship must escape the grip of the ice to reach the Terra Nova bay. The Italian icebreaker Laura Bassi follows the same route in 2023 and reaches the southernmost point on the planet ever reached by a ship. The story navigates through radio communications, making the viewer feel as if they were inside a spaceship. The human being is brought back to a primordial state, made of discoveries, resistance and fears. A deeply emotional experience in a remote, dangerous and still little explored place.
