Nato a Roma nel 1968, dopo il diploma al liceo artistico nel 1986, lavora come aiuto operatore e poi si dedica alla pittura. Nel 1996 vince il Sacher Festival organizzato da Nanni Moretti con il cortometraggio “Silhouette”, che l’anno seguente diventa uno dei tre episodi del suo primo lungometraggio “Terra di mezzo” un collage di storie di immigrazione a Roma, premiato al Festival Cinema Giovani di Torino con il Premio Speciale della Giuria. Nel 1998 gira il documentario “Oreste Pipolo” e il suo secondo lungometraggio, “Ospiti”, incentrato sulle vicende di due giovani albanesi che vivono a Roma, che vince il Premio Kodak alla Mostra d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia e ottiene anche la Menzione Speciale al Festival di Angers, Miglior Film al Festival di Valencia e Premio Kodak al Festival di Messina. Nel 2000 realizza il terzo lungometraggio, “Estate Romana”, un omaggio alla stagione dei teatri underground degli anni ’70, inserito nella selezione ufficiale della Mostra del Cinema di Venezia. Ma il grande successo di critica e pubblico arriva nel 2002 con un’incursione nel cinema di genere col film noir “L’imbalsamatore”, inserito nella Quinzaine des Réalisateurs del 55° Festival di Cannes col quale vince numerosi premi prestigiosi tra cui il David di Donatello per la Miglior Sceneggiatura. Nel 2004 arriva il film “Primo amore”, la storia di un uomo ossessionato dalla magrezza femminile che vince l’Orso d’Argento, il Nastro d’Argento e il David di Donatello per la Miglior Colonna Sonora. Nel 2008 gira “Gomorra”, pluripremiata trasposizione cinematografica del romanzo-inchiesta sulla Camorra di Roberto Saviano. Il film ottiene numerose candidature e importanti premi  tra cui il Gran Premio della Giuria al Festival del Cinema di Cannes, che Garrone vincerà nuovamente nel 2012 con la commedia nera “Reality”. Nel 2015 torna a Cannes con “Il Racconto dei Racconti”, un grande affresco in chiave fantastica del periodo barocco e vince 7 David di Donatello fra cui il premio alla Miglior Regia. Nel 2018 con il film “Dogman” si aggiudica al Festival di Cannes la Palma d’Oro per il miglior attore al protagonista Marcello Fonte.  Due gli appuntamenti in programma al Lucania Film Festival con Matteo Garrone: Cine Talk (aperto a tutti) e Master Class.

Born in Rome in 1968, after taking the school-leaving certificate at art school in 1986, he worked as a camera operator’s assistant and then devoted himself to painting. In 1996 he won the Sacher d’Oro, an award sponsored by Nanni Moretti with the short film “Silhouette” that in the following year became one of the three episodes that are in his first feature film “Terra di Mezzo”. It is a miscellany of immigration stories in Rome that won the Special Jury Award at Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani (now Torino Film Festival). In 1998 he shot the documentary “Oreste Pipolo” and his second feature film “Guests” that is focused on the vicissitudes of two young Albanians who live in Rome. This film won the Kodak Award at Venice International Film Festival and the Special Mention at Angers Festival, as well as the Best Film at Valencia Film Festival and the Kodak Award at Messina Film Festival. In 2000 he made his third feature film, “Roman Summer”, a homage to the 1970s-underground theatre season, included in the Official Selection of Venice International Film Festival. But the great acclaim from audiences and critics was achieved in 2002 with a foray into genre cinema: his film noir “The Embalmer”, included in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs of the 55^th Cannes Film Festival. With this film he won several important awards including David di Donatello Award for Best Screenplay. In 2004 it was the turn of “First Love”, the story of a man having woman’s thinness on the brain, that won the Silver Berlin Bear, the Silver Ribbon, and David di Donatello Award for Best Music. In 2008 he directed “Gomorrah”, a multi-awarded film version of the non-fiction investigative book about the criminal organization Camorra by Roberto Saviano. This film gains many nominations and important awards such as the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes Film Festival, that Garrone won also in 2012 with his black comedy “Reality”. In 2015 he came back to Cannes with “Tale of Tales”, a marvellous fantasy portrayal belonging to Baroque period winning seven David di Donatello Awards including Best Director. In 2018, with his “Dogman”, Marcello Fonte won the Palme d’Or for Best Actor. Two planned events at Lucania Film Festival with Matteo Garrone: Lectio Magistralis and Master Class.
