Alexander Coates (Alessandro Cozzi Lepri), Roma, 1967.
Nato nella capitale in pieno boom psichedelico, scopro la musica rock grazie ai miei fratelli più grandi che negli anni 70 portano a casa vinile di varia estrazione che spazia da Lucio Battisti fino ai gruppi progressive italiani e britannici, passando per Mal dei Primitives.Mi ricordo pomeriggi passati a ballare con mia sorella sui dischi del Banco del Mutuo Soccorso e dei New Trolls. Alla fine degli anni 80/inizio 90, dopo aver assistito a un concerto dei Sick Rose, divento ossessionato dalla musica anni 60, in particolare quella delle band di teenager americani che in seguito alla British Invasion avevano messo su gruppi beat per emulare appunto il successo dei Beatles: un genere che, in seguito, viene denominato garage-punk (o 60’s punk). A Roma suono con gli Head the Hares che, tra il 1991 e il 1995, incidono due LP per etichette USA e una manciata di singoli tuttora apprezzati dai fan del genere.Nel 1995 mi trasferisco a Londra per motivi di studio e continuo a suonare con gli Embrooks (1996 – 2005, da poco riformati) con cui pubblico tre LP e una nutrita schiera di sette pollici per etichette europee e americane, tra cui la leggendaria Voxx di Greg Shaw.Allo stesso tempo inizio a frequentare locali di musica strettamente Sixties, tra cui il venerato Moustrap (che nel 2016 ha celebrato il 25° anniversario) e lo storico Blow Up che, dopo anni di inattività, ha da poco riaperto a Soho. A partire dal 2006 faccio il DJ esclusivamente con singoli in vinile d’epoca per vari club londinesi. A parte il Mousetrap, che frequento da oltre vent’anni, di recente anche come DJ, ho fatto ballare al Cross-Fire (il primo nel 2009) e in nuovi club della capitale fra cui Hidden Door, Timebox, Brainwashed, Sundaze, solo per menzionarne alcuni. Oltre a svariate serate in Europa dove ho l’opportunità di incontrare e scambiare idee con altri DJ e collezionisti Sixties.Il fatto di suonare con varie band e di aver frequentato per tutto questo tempo i club di mezzo mondo mi aiuta a creare le giuste selezioni. Selezioni che contano su una collezione di svariate migliaia di sette pollici originali, molti dei quali piuttosto rari, di gruppi spesso famosi e talvolta oscuri anche per i più accaniti frequentatori del circuito Sixties.

Born in the Italian capital in full psychedelic boom, I discovered rock music through my older brothers who in the 70’s used to bring home vinyl of different styles ranging from Lucio Battisti to the Italian and British progressive groups, via Mal of the Primitives. I remember many evenings spent dancing with my sister and the records of Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and New Trolls. In the late 80/early 90’s, after attending a concert of the Sick Rose, I become obsessed with 60s music, particularly that of the bands of American teenagers who after the British Invasion had grouped to emulate the success of the Beatles: a genre that, in retrospect, was defined garage-punk (or 60’s punk). In Rome, I played guitar and organ with the Head Hares and, between 1991 and 1995, recorded with them two LP for US labels and a handful of singles still appreciated by fans of the genre. In 1995 I moved to London to study and joined the Embrooks (1996-2005, recently reformed) with whom I recorded three LPs and an array of seven inches for European and American labels, including the legendary Voxx label of Greg Shaw. At the same time, I started attending local Sixties clubs, including the legendary Mousetrap (which in 2016 celebrated its 25th anniversary) and the historical Blow-Up in China Town that, after years of inactivity, has recently re-opened still in Soho. Since 2006, I have been doing DJ nights using exclusively originally 60s pressed 45s in various London clubs. Apart from the Mousetrap, which I have been attending for over twenty years, I have also recently played 45s at the Cross-Fire (the first in 2009) and other new clubs including Hidden Door, Timebox, Brainwashed, Sundaze, only to name a few. In addition, I was invited as a guest DJ at a number of clubs in Europe where I have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with other DJs and Sixties collectors. Being a musician myself and having attended 60s clubs all over the world has helped me to improve my selections. These selections rely on a collection of several thousands of seven inches, some of which quite rare, of popular and more obscure bands only known to collectors of the Sixties circuit.
