Synopsis
Prendiamo in prestito lo slang inglese “Elephant In The Room” come tema della storia. Si riferisce a una situazione in cui le persone, sebbene vedano il problema, fanno finta che non accada nulla ed evitano di affrontarli. L’elefante, rappresenta i problemi delle donne in una società patriarcale, ostacola la protagonista femminile in ogni sua azione. Una donna potrebbe sentirsi impotente nell’affrontare i limiti della vita sui suoi comportamenti e pensieri. La sfera rappresenta, nella parte inconscia della mente di una donna, le responsabilità e gli obblighi concessi dalla società. La scatola è la raffigurazione di tutte le cose esterne, risultato di un’ideologia sociale tradizionale legata ai ruoli. Quindi i colleghi maschi possono spostare e impilare le scatole, che sono il simbolo delle loro azioni e realizzazioni nella vita reale. La protagonista femminile viene privata di “scatole” e di scelte. Più scatole vengono private alla protagonista, più grande diventa l’elefante. Cosa dovrebbe fare la donna? 

We borrow the English slang “Elephant In The Room” as a theme of the story. It refers to a situation where people, though see the problem, pretend nothing happens and avoid touching the issues. The elephant, meaning women’s problems in a patriarchal society, hinders the female protagonist in her every action. A woman might feel helpless in facing life restraints on her behaviors and thoughts. The ball refers to those responsibilities and obligations, granted by the society, on a woman’s unconscious mind. The box means all the outside stuff, drawn from a traditional social ideology “Men are breadwinners; women are homemakers.” Therefore, the male colleagues could move and stack the boxes well, which are symbols of their actions and accomplishments in real life. It becomes a great contrast between the males and the female protagonist, who was deprived of boxes and choices. The more the boxes are deprived of, the bigger the elephant becomes. What should the woman do?

Synopsis
“A cosa pensa il boia quando torna a casa la sera dal lavoro?” Ispirato all’omonima poesia di Carl Sandburg del 1922, The Hangman at Home, è un film d’animazione che esplora i temi che circondano il riconoscimento e l’intimità imbarazzante dell’umanità. Raccontato in cinque storie intrecciate; ogni situazione presenta una persona, o più persone, in un momento delicato: fragile, giocoso, terrorizzato, contemplato, confuso, curioso… Siamo tutti molto simili in questi momenti, mettendoci in guardia per mettere in discussione la nostra responsabilità e le nostre risposte.

“What does the hangman think about when he goes home at night from work?” Inspired by the 1922 Carl Sandburg poem of the same title, The Hangman at Home, is an animated film exploring themes surrounding acknowledgement and the awkward intimacy of humanness. Told in five interwoven stories; each situation presents a person, or persons in a delicate moment: fragile, playful, terrified, contemplated, confused, curious…We are all very much alike in these moments – alerting us to question our own responsibility and responses.

On 23 February 2005, the radio announced a law project about the benefits of French colonisation. This announcement disrupted the daily life of Louise and her family. Her house turns out to be inhabited by strange presences.
